Supposedly the shisha comes from India. The concept came about as a bamboo stick was put into a coconut in order to be able to smoke. The shisha came to the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Even today the feeling of community that arose during this period is prevalent today. The culture of shisha smoking spread to Iran and from there into large parts of the Arab world.

The shisha has become an integral part of the cultures of the Arab world. Smoking shisha with others is seen as a sign of hospitality. The shisha origins that arose in Turkey have since spread to the Western World. In the Western World, smoking shisha is seen as an alternative to regular tobacco smoking, especially in Europe, where they are becoming more and more popular. Today there are many cities that have shisha bars. It is especially popular among young people who enjoy smoking shisha in public recreational facilities and parks.
